Our Tuesday & Friday Cooking Groups aren’t just about food. They’re about:

  • Building confidence and independence.

  • Practicing communication and teamwork.

  • Making friends in a safe, inclusive environment.

  • Gaining skills that carry over into daily life at home and in the community.

✨ Every chop, stir, and taste is a step toward independence — and a chance to share laughter, connection, and achievement with others.

👨‍🍳 What’s on the menu?

  • Whether you’re stepping into the kitchen for the very first time or wanting to build on skills you already have, our Cooking Groups are designed with all abilities and experience levels in mind. Every session is supportive, hands-on, and paced to meet your individual needs.

    Here’s what you can expect:

    • Practical techniques made simple → Learn how to safely chop, measure, mix, stir, season, and cook using everyday tools and ingredients. We break each skill into manageable steps so it feels easy and achievable.

    • Kitchen safety first → Understand how to use knives, stovetops, and ovens safely, while also learning about hygiene, handwashing, and food storage. Safety is always our top priority.

    • Step-by-step recipes → Follow guided recipes that are easy to understand, budget-friendly, and designed to be recreated at home. Each week offers something new — from quick snacks to full meals.

    • Learning at your own pace → No rushing, no pressure. You decide how much or how little you’d like to do, and our staff encourage you to take small steps forward each week.

    • Guidance from experts who care → A qualified chef leads the cooking, supported by our friendly staff who are there to help, encourage, and adapt activities to your needs.

    • Celebrate your progress → Every dish is a chance to practice independence, boost confidence, and share your creations with others around the table.

✨ By the end of each session, you’ll not only enjoy a delicious meal, but you’ll also walk away with new skills, more confidence, and the joy of knowing you made it happen.

  • Cooking isn’t just about making food — it’s about learning how to nourish your body in ways that feel simple, achievable, and enjoyable. In our Cooking Groups, we take the time to explore the basics of nutrition in a way that’s practical and easy to understand.

    Here’s what we focus on:

    • Simple, healthy meals → Discover how to create dishes that are quick, tasty, and affordable, without needing complicated ingredients or advanced skills.

    • Balanced eating → Learn what makes up a balanced plate (vegetables, protein, carbs, and healthy fats) and how to combine them in the right proportions.

    • Portion sizes → Understand how much food your body needs, how to avoid under- or over-serving, and how to listen to hunger cues.

    • Meal planning made easy → Work through the basics of planning meals for the week — including shopping lists, budgeting for ingredients, and prepping food in advance.

    • Tailored to your goals → Whether you want to eat healthier, manage your energy levels, or just expand the types of food you feel confident cooking, our staff adapt lessons to fit your personal needs.

    • Food and wellbeing → Learn how the meals you prepare can boost mood, energy, and overall health, making everyday life more enjoyable.

✨ By combining practical cooking skills with nutrition knowledge, participants walk away not just knowing how to cook, but also why the food they choose matters — helping build long-term confidence and independence in daily life.

  • Cooking is about more than food — it’s about people. Sharing a kitchen is a natural way to break the ice, make friends, and connect with others.

In our Cooking Groups, participants work side by side on tasks like chopping, stirring, or plating, which creates plenty of opportunities to:

    • Build social skills → practice communication, turn-taking, and teamwork in a relaxed, supportive setting.

    • Grow confidence → trying new things together helps reduce anxiety and makes it easier to step outside your comfort zone.

    • Celebrate teamwork → completing group challenges (like preparing a meal as a team) encourages collaboration and a sense of achievement.

    • Enjoy shared experiences → sitting down together at the end of the session to share the meal strengthens connections and builds a sense of belonging.

✨ The kitchen becomes more than just a place to cook — it becomes a space to laugh, connect, and create memories together, making every session both social and meaningful.

  • The highlight of every Cooking Group is sitting down to share the delicious food you’ve created. After all the chopping, stirring, and teamwork, the reward is a tasty meal that everyone can be proud of.

    Here’s why this part matters:

    • Try new foods in a safe space → Cooking together makes it easier (and less intimidating) to taste new flavours and dishes, especially with encouragement from peers and staff.

    • Celebrate your achievements → Every plate is proof of your hard work and growing independence. Eating the meal you’ve made gives a real sense of pride and accomplishment.

    • Social connection → Sharing a table creates opportunities for conversation, laughter, and building friendships. It turns mealtime into a moment of belonging.

    • Healthy habits → Enjoying nutritious meals together shows how food can fuel your body and mood, while also being enjoyable.

    • Confidence building → Each successful dish reinforces the idea that “I can do this,” helping participants feel more capable in their own kitchens at home.

✨ The best part of our Cooking Groups isn’t just the food — it’s the joy of sharing, connecting, and celebrating what you’ve created together.

  • At Voyager Care, we believe learning works best in a space where people feel safe, supported, and included. Our Cooking Groups are designed to be just that — a place where everyone feels at home, no matter their skill level or experience.

Here’s what makes our groups special:

    • Learn at your own pace → There’s no pressure to be perfect. You’re encouraged to take your time, ask questions, and build confidence step by step.

    • Supportive staff → Our qualified chef and friendly support workers are there to guide, encourage, and celebrate with you along the way.

    • Encouragement over judgment → Mistakes are part of learning! Every attempt in the kitchen is celebrated as progress.

    • Community spirit → It’s not just about cooking meals, but about connecting with others, building friendships, and sharing achievements as a team.

    • Celebrating achievements → From chopping your first carrot to preparing a full dish, every accomplishment is recognised and valued.

✨ In the end, it’s never just about cooking — it’s about confidence, community, and celebrating every milestone, big or small.

  • Food is one of the best ways to explore different cultures, traditions, and stories. At Voyager Care, we celebrate cultural diversity in our Cooking Groups by introducing participants to meals and flavours from around the world.

    🔹 What This Looks Like

    • Exploring cuisines → From Italian pastas to Mexican tacos, Asian stir-fries, Mediterranean salads, or Aussie favourites, each week can feature dishes from different cultural backgrounds.

    • Learning through food → Cooking meals from different cultures helps participants learn about traditions, flavours, and cooking styles they may not have experienced before.

    • Encouraging open-mindedness → Trying new recipes together is a safe and supportive way to explore new tastes and step outside comfort zones.

    • Celebrating inclusion → We welcome participant and family input — if someone has a favourite cultural dish or family recipe, we love bringing it into the group.

    • Special events → Cooking days can be themed around holidays or cultural celebrations (e.g., Lunar New Year dumplings, Diwali treats, or Christmas baking).

    🔹 Why It Matters

    • Expands skills → Learning to cook a variety of dishes introduces new techniques and ingredients.

    • Builds connection → Sharing stories about food helps participants connect with one another.

    • Promotes inclusion → By cooking meals from diverse backgrounds, everyone feels represented and valued.

    • Encourages fun & curiosity → Cultural cooking days are exciting, creative, and a chance to celebrate food as more than just fuel.

✨ At Voyager Care, cultural cooking isn’t just about making tasty meals — it’s about celebrating diversity, inclusion, and connection through food.

  • Learning doesn’t stop when the session ends! At Voyager Care, we provide participants with easy-to-follow, take-home recipes so they can continue practicing their skills outside the group. These recipes are designed to be simple, practical, and empowering — giving participants the chance to show off their new skills at home.

    🔹 What This Looks Like

    • Step-by-step guides → Clear instructions with visuals, so participants can confidently recreate meals without feeling overwhelmed.

    • Accessible language → Recipes use plain, easy-to-read wording, with optional picture-based steps for those who prefer a visual guide.

    • Healthy focus → Balanced meals that promote good nutrition, portion control, and simple meal planning skills.

    • Customisable recipes → Participants can adapt recipes to their preferences, dietary needs, or cultural foods.

    • Personal cookbook → Over time, participants can collect their recipes into their own folder or booklet — building a personalised “cookbook” they can be proud of.

    🔹 Why It Matters

    • Builds independence → Encourages participants to practice cooking at home with or without support.

    • Reinforces learning → Skills learned in group sessions are repeated, helping knowledge stick long-term.

    • Boosts confidence → Sharing meals they’ve made at home with family or carers builds pride and self-esteem.

    • Encourages choice & control → Participants can pick which meals they’d like to make again, supporting autonomy in their daily life.

✨ With take-home recipes, participants don’t just enjoy a meal during the session — they build a set of lifelong skills they can return to again and again.

  • Cooking doesn’t start in the kitchen — it starts at the shops! At Voyager Care, we help participants build practical shopping skills so they feel more confident, independent, and capable when it comes to planning and buying food.

    🔹 What This Looks Like

    • Making shopping lists → Learning to write or use digital shopping lists to stay organised and reduce stress.

    • Budgeting in practice → Comparing prices, learning about specials, and sticking to a budget when choosing ingredients.

    • Navigating the shops → Building confidence with layout, signage, and moving safely and independently through supermarkets or local shops.

    • Making choices → Encouraging participants to select their own ingredients, practice decision-making, and exercise personal preference.

    • Healthy swaps → Learning how to identify healthier options (e.g., wholegrain bread vs white bread, water vs soft drink) while still respecting personal choices.

    • Payment skills → Practicing using EFTPOS, cash, or apps to pay for groceries and check receipts.

    • Community participation → Shopping trips double as an opportunity to practice social interactions, like greeting staff or asking for help.

    🔹 Why It Matters

    • Real-world independence → Builds confidence to shop on their own or with minimal support.

    • Daily life skills → Links directly to cooking, budgeting, and meal planning skills learned in group.

    • Social confidence → Provides safe opportunities to practice communication with shop staff and navigating public spaces.

    • Empowerment → Choosing your own food fosters pride, control, and ownership over your meals.

✨ Shopping Skills aren’t just about groceries — they’re about confidence, independence, and being an active part of the community.

  • Our Cooking Groups aren’t just about fun in the kitchen — they’re carefully designed to support participants in meeting their NDIS goals across multiple areas of the Core Supports budget. Every recipe, activity, and shared meal connects back to skills that promote independence, confidence, and community participation.
